BCT Sponsors Local Student for 2025 FRS Youth Tour to Washington, D.C.

In June 2025, BCT proudly sponsored Anna Goodson, an incoming senior at Molalla High School, to attend the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. The annual event brings together high school students from across rural America to explore the nation’s capital, learn about the legislative process, and understand the importance of broadband connectivity in rural communities.

Anna is a standout student and community leader. She serves as vice president of her local FFA chapter, works with the Clackamas County Elections Board, and is active in her church. Her favorite subject is AP U.S. History, which made the trip especially meaningful.

“It was surreal to see the places I’ve studied in class come to life,” Anna said. “I loved every part of it—the people, the places, the history.”

During the tour, Anna visited iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Capitol, met with staff from Congresswoman Janelle Bynum’s office, and toured the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) building. One of her most memorable moments was sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with new friends, taking in the view of the National Mall.

The experience also gave her a deeper appreciation for the role of broadband in rural communities. At the FCC, she learned about the challenges and costs of providing internet access in remote areas—and how vital that access is for education, communication, and opportunity.

“Without rural broadband, I wouldn’t have been able to connect with the amazing people I met on this trip,” she reflected. “It really made me realize how lucky I am to have reliable internet at home.”

The Youth Tour also sparked new ideas for Anna’s future. Inspired by the people she met and the institutions she visited, she’s now considering studying political science and pursuing a career in public service. She’s even looking into colleges near D.C., including Southern Virginia University.

“I’ve had so many opportunities lately—from working at the elections office to this trip—and they’ve all pointed me toward public service,” she said.

Anna first heard about the Youth Tour through her mom, who encouraged her to apply. After submitting her application, she was thrilled to be selected to represent her community.

BCT, a member-owned cooperative with over 120 years of history, is proud to support the next generation of rural leaders. Sponsoring students like Anna is part of that mission.

“Anna represents the spirit of our community—curious, driven, and full of potential,” said Conner from BCT’s marketing team.

Anna plans to serve an 18-month mission for her church after high school and then attend a four-year university. She also looks forward to applying for BCT’s scholarship program during her senior year.
